The endarterectomy dissection plane is developed just at the level of maximum disease. Once the plane has been developed to the depth of the artery, a special sharply curved clamp is used to continue the dissection to the opposite side of the arteriotomy. The Wylie Carotid Dissecting Clamp was designed for this purpose and may be preferred to a standard right angle clamp.
